A true jewel of Uzbekistani embroidery, this magnificent antique Suzani is illuminated with a dazzling display of bright colors and exotic design. Because of their exquisite needlework, the highly desirable Suzani was usually presented as a valuable dowry, and ultimately used in the home as a decorative wall hanging or bed cover. The rich oranges, reds, blues, yellows and greens seem to vibrate against the Suzanis neutral linen body. A multiplicity of stylized flora, such as wild acanthus leaves, palmettes, blossoms and various decorative motifs, only add to the vibrancy and splendor of the piece. The understated wide border, with its thin inner and outer guards, bears a repeating pattern of flower and leaves to complement the presiding, ornamental nature of the needlework.
