Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug



A beautiful Sultanabad rug, this piece features a cinnamon-shaded field bearing an intricate floral motif of repeating red, light purple and pink flowers. A thin blue border displays straight rows of single blossoms, interspersed with ruyi or palmette symbols and buds. The blue border is surrounded on either side by a narrow ivory guard border of scrolled blue, red and pink flowers. During the 19th Century, Sultanabad became a center for the manufacture of elegant, ornate, handmade rugs and carpets.
